Press Notice of Collaboration on Genomics Research by The Satriabudi Dharma Setia Foundation and Oxford Nanopore Technologies

-To Quote

Jakarta, June 27th 2023 — In order to improve access to genome sequencing services for researchers in Indonesia, The Satriabudi Dharma Setia Foundation (YSDS) has collaborated with genome sequencing service providers Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT).

This collaboration includes the provision of 20 packages of the latest genome sequencing tools, namely MinION and PromethION 2 which will be distributed to various research institutions, from both public and private institutions in Indonesia. YSDS will also provide them with no less than 1000 flowcells packages and other sequencing consumables in total. These consumables will be distributed with multiple options of research collaborations scheme which the institutions can choose depending on their needs.

MinION Oxford Nanopore is the newest third-generation genome sequencing technology on the market. With many advantages such as portability, ease of use, simplicity, sorting speed and long read duration, this technology is now a competitor to established sorting platforms. Meanwhile, PromethION is an ultra-high throughput benchtop sequencing device from Oxford Nanopore capable of running multiple large format flow cells, each generating > 100 Gb in a single run. As well as being able to generate large amounts of data per application, PromethION also allows flexibility to the user, whereby each flow cell position can be individually addressed, allowing the user to run several types of samples and experiments simultaneously without having to fill in the entire sequencer. This has an impact on reducing processing time and minimizing cost per sample.

Nanopore-based genome sequencing is a new technology that allows the analysis of long DNA or RNA fragments. This technology works by monitoring changes in electric current when nucleic acids are passed through protein nanopores. The resulting signal is decoded to give a specific DNA or RNA sequence. The unique real-time and scalable features of this technology make it ideal for the rapid and cost-effective characterization of pathogens in clinical samples.

YSDS guarantees open access, ease of use and transparency for every researcher who wants to use the tool. At the end of the collaboration, YSDS also offers an equipment grant scheme for institutions in need.
